I am unsure of my technique, how do I latch my baby on properly?

Some babies nurse successfully in any position, while others need everything to be just right in order to draw the milk out of the breast effectively.

To make sure that your baby is latched on correctly begin by positioning yourself. Sit up straight with a pillow behind your back for support. You can now position your baby with his belly facing you and his nose opposite your nipple. Move him towards you, gently brush his lips against your nipple and wait for him to open. As he gapes open swiftly move him onto your breast aiming his lower lip far away from your nipple.

When properly latched on, your baby should begin sucking quickly and these should eventually change to swallows as your milk is ejected. During the feed you may find it helpful to gently squeeze your breast to keep him awake and eating. Try compressing your breast while your baby is sucking. This way he will associate his sucks with more milk and soon he will be able to draw in all the milk on his own. You'll know that your baby has had enough milk when he comes off the breast himself.

Latching the baby on properly is something that many women need hands on help with. If you find that you are unable to successfully latch the baby on alone or you are worried that your baby is not nursing properly make an appointment with a skilled breastfeeding counselor. Proper positioning is learned and comes with practice.
