In the early days of nursing it is normal to feel slight discomfort during the first moments of nursing. This sensation should diminish as the feed continues. Experiencing pain throughout the entire feed or after a feed can usually be resolved by improving the latch. Read my entry on how to breastfeed for help on technique. If you still feel pain despite your efforts to improve the latch then make an appointment with a skilled breastfeeding counselor for hands on help.
A poor latch can also lead to a breast or nipple infection. If you have developed a fever, redness in the breast or a burning pain you should see your doctor.
