How can I increase my milk supply?

The milk you produce works on supply and demand. This means that the more you nurse or stimulate and empty your breast, the more milk you will have. Nursing your baby with an effective latch is the best way to increase your milk supply. Any special foods or supplements are secondary to this.

If you think your milk supply is low or has decreased its best to meet with a lactation specialist. A lactation specialist can insure that you are nursing effectively and will determine if any other actions should be taken to increase your milk supply.

Some women find that taking chilbeh (fenugreek) pills can increase their milk supply. Additionally, quinoa is an extremely nutritious grain that has been traditionally used by breastfeeding mothers in Africa and South America. See the recipe section below for cooking instructions.

Keep in mind, these are only secondary measures to increasing milk supply. Improving the baby’s latch to the breast and increasing the stimulation to the breast should be your first goal when you need to increase your milk supply.
