When weaning, at any age, it is important that you do so gradually. This is both for the sake of the child and the mother's health. Abrupt weaning can be cause engorgement and may even lead to a breast infection. It is for this reason that I recommend cutting out one nurse every few days, allowing your body time to adjust to the changes.
If your breasts begin to feel painful and hard you may have moved too quickly. If this happens, it is important that you either allow your child to nurse a bit or to express some milk, just to the point where your breasts are soft again.
